The Disadvantages of Adsense

As adsense becomes one of the most popular publishing software for PPC advertising, there are still flaws and drawbacks.
Since its inception, advertisers have chosen to advertise on search because they felt visitors would be less specific. This is a genuine concern and one that makes a lot of sense. If you are visiting a website and see an advertisement, it is likely that you are not particularly concentrating on its content.

Adsense has also become so popular that people can tell them apart from other ads.  Therefore, people may choose to ignore them without even thinking about them.  This has been a hot topic discussed by bloggers and it might contain a lot of truth.  Many have blamed Google for this and for its decision to include text that says "ads by Google" below the ad.

Many publishers also fail to get the income they expected when starting the program.  Those who only get 30-40 visitors a day on their website are unlikely to earn even a dollar a day.  Many advertisers talk about 1.5% to 5% rates for traffic per click conversion, while only earning around $0.10 per click.  The math doesn't work very well, but you can hardly blame advertisers or Google if you don't drive enough traffic.  The key is to drive targeted traffic to your website that is likely to click on the ads, however it is said that it may be easier in other programs that allow figures like 75% ad revenue share for publishers.

Another disadvantage of adsense is that it has almost become vulgar. Their appearance on websites that generally appear to be home-made has led people to inextricably associate them.  This can only be addressed by evolving adsense to be more attractive to bigger brands while those currently using adsense are restricted.

Google Adsense also has to address the issue of click fraud, which is predicted to account for more than 15% of click-through rate on content.  This has meant that advertisers that have been particularly affected have moved away to other programs or have restricted their advertising to search.

This has meant there is less competition for content and therefore less revenue for publishers.  Publishers who previously had high-performing ads now have to modify their content to ensure they don't receive any ads.  This has largely been the fault of the publishers themselves, however the problem is that;  If not addressed, it could bring Adsense to its knees.

Google Adsense also has the disadvantage of not paying enough for its search program.  Other similar programs pay higher fees, and if publishers decide to go elsewhere, there will be problems for both advertisers and publishers.  Although Google doesn't pay enough for search, another major problem with Adsense is that it doesn't have a powerful database of display ads.  Many advertisers prefer to display display ads, however this has yet to materialize.  Since there are several other programs for graphical PPC distribution, problems could occur.

While this may not be a problem for all publishers, many complain that the ads within their site don't change, so their regular visitors don't see new ads and therefore don't visit them.  This is an issue that could be fixed by rotating the ads.  However, if the ads rotate, how will that tie in with advertisers paying a fee per click?  These are all issues that Google has to address to ensure that Adsense remains the market leader.

Adwords on the other hand also has great advantages, and is still the best on the market.  Advertisers can choose their CPC rates so that even when they feel like they're not getting the results they expect, they can lower their prices while still using the service.

Although many problems with adsense remain, the program remains the most popular with publishers, while Google Adwords remains the most popular with advertisers;  with a database of more than 140,000 Adwords it will remain at the top in the future.
